Abstract:Along with the rapid spread and plantation of maize that is resistant to insects and glyphosate, the environmental safety of genetically modified (GM) maize becomes the focus of attention. To discuss the environmental safety of genetically modified (GM) maize C0030.3.5 expressing the cry1Ab and EPSPS protein, water flea Daphnia magna, a crustacean arthropod commonly used as a model organism in ecotoxicological studies, were fed a basal diet of maize flours from C0030.3.5 or its parental maize DBN318 at the concentration of 1.5 g·L-1 (per individual per day) in a 28-day study. No significant differences were observed between D. magna feeding C0030.3.5 and non-GM flour on survival, body size and reproduction. These results suggested GM maize C0030.3.5 showed negative effect on neither growth nor reproduction of D. magna and provided a scientific basis for the commercial application and environmental safety management of the transgenic maize in China.
