研究领域主要从事动物行为生态与保护生物学研究，提出了动物行为层次结构的概念与PAE编码分类系统、行为的表现空间和行为的刚性与弹性等概念, 研究了动物的繁殖求偶行为的模式与变异、动物内分泌与行为的调节、圈养动物的行为变异、多样性与适应性以及麋鹿的交配行为、配偶制度与种群遗传多样性管理。

研究中国鸟兽物种多样性的结构和格局、中国阔叶林带哺乳动物的多样性与栖息地评价、家庭的能耗模式、人兽冲突与自然保护区管理。提出区分生态濒危物种与进化濒危物种、区分生活史对策、引入"经济灭绝"概念的濒危物种等级标准，探讨了中国自然保护区的面积上限问题，提出生物遗传资源的元所有权、衍生所有权与修饰权概念。探讨中国野生动植物国际贸易的动态和理论、不同生物类群物种多样性协同变化的格局和原因、环境气候变化与动物区系的响应。近年来致力于CITES非致危性判定（Non-detrimental finding, NDF）和中国哺乳动物红色名录研究。
