Orbital integrals naturally appear in the harmonic analysis of real and p-adic Lie groups, while their twisted analogues naturally appear in the study of Shimura varieties and other related spaces. This suggests a general philosophy of using trace formula methods to relate the arithmetic and geometry of Shimura varieties to representation theory. We report on some recent progress reflecting this philosophy.
