Bio/Description
Profile
Mariana Bono (Ph.D. Sorbonne University) is Associate Director of the Spanish Language Program and teaches courses in language and linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and in the Freshman Seminar Program. She is a Faculty Fellow and Adviser at Whitman College. Before coming to Princeton, she taught at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, and at Birkbeck, University of London. Her research explores multilingualism, its history, its advantages and challenges, particularly in educational settings. The core questions that drive her work are “How does language affect our self-representation and social domains of interaction?” and “What cultural and historical conceptions of language are operational in our everyday language practices?” Her approach to teaching draws upon the latest trends in language pedagogy, psycholinguistics, bilingual studies, pragmatics and discourse analysis. She is particularly interested in the processes and factors that bear on instructed language learning, and has contributed to the implementation of a pedagogical model that integrates language and culture into the Spanish language curriculum.
