Bio/Description

Profile

Raquel Mattson-Prieto received her Ph.D. in Spanish from Temple University in 2019 with a concentration in Hispanic Linguistics. Her dissertation is a classroom ethnography exploring the experiences of Spanish heritage speakers enrolled in university Spanish language courses and focusing on their investment and motivation for studying their home language in a formal setting. Her research interests include second language acquisition, social theories of language learning (identity and stance), language ideologies, and pedagogies for mixed language instruction in classes that enroll both heritage speakers and second language learners. Dr. Mattson-Prieto received a dual B.A. in Anthropology and Spanish in 2009 from California State University, Chico. She has more than 12 years of language teaching experience in Spanish and English in Spain and the U.S. Outside of the university, Dr. Mattson-Prieto volunteers as a Spanish-English interpreter and translator for the Participatory Defense hubs in Philadelphia, PA.
