Profile
CHRISTINE SAGNIER (Doctorat de Sciences du Langage, Université de Besan?on) is Director of the French Language Program and a specialist in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. She is currently in charge of the undergraduate curriculum in French Language and Culture and responsible for the training and mentoring program for Assistants in Instruction.Her research interests include sociocultural and sociocognitive theory, language in society, multimodal discourse analysis, multiliteracies and social semiotics. She has published articles in various European research journals. Her first book “Métacognition et Interactions en didactique des langues: perspectives sociocognitives” was published by Peter Lang in 2013.
She contributed to a volume titled “Multiliteracies in World Language Education”, published by Routledge in 2015. Her latest book “Des images et des mots au XXIème siècle: nouvelles perspectives sur la multimodalité, la communication visuelle et les multilittératies”?(2018) presents a critical overview of current research on multimodality and multiliteracies within discourse studies, in the rapidly changing landscape of digital communication.
Teaching Interests
Christine Sagnier teaches courses at different levels in the Program in French Language and Culture. She is particularly interested in designing an enriched curriculum fostering an intellectually driven approach to the learning of the language, culture and texts of the French-speaking world.In the undergraduate program, she has created and teaches courses related to her field of research, such as FRE 215: "France Today: Culture, Politics and Society" and FRE 309: “Reading Images”, focusing on social semiotics and visual communication. She also teaches FRE 319: “Language, Power and Identity” an introduction to sociolinguistics, which explores debates linked to language in society, culture, diversity and identity.
She has founded the immersion summer program in Aix-en-Provence. In her course, she introduces students to journalistic and creative writing and has recently developed an ethnographic component on linguistic landscapes titled “Voices in the City”.
Christine Sagnier also teaches a graduate seminar in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition.
