Overview
Dr. Bookstein earned his medical degree at SUNY/Brooklyn. He completed his medical internship at Montefiore Medical Center and psychiatry residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute. At Columbia, Dr. Bookstein received the Sidney Malitz Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Psychotherapy and was selected as chief resident. He trained as a psychoanalyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.Over the years, Dr. Bookstein has supervised residents at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute. At the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center, he has taught on numerous subjects, chairs the Psychopathology course, and supervises psychotherapy students. He has served as Associate Director of the Admissions and Treatment Service, Co-Chair of the Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program, and Treasurer, in which role, he sat on the Executive Committee of the Center. Dr. Bookstein was Chair of the Rado Advanced Psychoanalytic Seminars and is on the International Scholars Committee of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine. He is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine, and the International Society of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy.
Dr. Bookstein maintains his private practice in adult psychiatry, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis in midtown Manhattan. His areas of special interest include the treatment of mood, anxiety, and borderline, narcissistic, and other personality disorders. He has extensive experience in Transference-focused psychotherapy, an empirically-validated treatment for borderline personality disorder.
