Dr. Brucato's clinical and research focuses are on the assessment and characterization of the prodromal or attenuated phase of emergent psychotic illness, including Schizophrenia and psychotic affective disorders, and severe violence in the contexts of psychosis, personality disorders, and other factors. As the Assistant Director of COPE, one of a small number of worldwide research clinics dedicated to the evaluation, treatment and study of the psychosis risk state, he oversees all clinical assessments as part of numerous research projects related to psychotic illness and violence risk, and is widely consulted by professionals, families and individuals throughout the country.
Dr. Brucato has written over 35 articles on the subjects of psychotic illness and violence, and was the author of the book, with Dr. Michael H. Stone, The New Evil: Understanding the Emergence of Modern Violent Crime in 2019.
Additionally, Dr. Brucato oversees community outreach, conducting workshops, talks and and grand rounds on the psychosis risk state at academic centers, clinics and hospitals across the tri-state area. He is the Director of COPE's psychology externship program, and trains all students and volunteers at COPE in the assessment of attenuated and threshold psychosis; the evaluation of violence risk; and differential diagnosis.
