Overview

Dr. Merrill completed his medical training at Harvard Medical School and his psychiatric residency at Columbia University / New York State Psychiatric Institute. After residency, he received his Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.
Dr. Merrill spent five years as an attending psychiatrist and then director on the Washington Heights Community Service Inpatient Unit at New York State Psychiatric Institute. While there, he oversaw the treatment of acutely ill, hospitalized patients, and supervised trainees from a variety of disciplines. He continues to work part-time at the Audubon Clinic, an outpatient branch of the Washington Heights Community Service.
Dr. Merrill has maintained a private practice on the Upper West Side since 2007, where he sees patients for psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and psychopharmacology. He specializes in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders.
Dr. Merrill also continues to teach trainees in the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry. He supervises residents in the Long-Term Therapy clinic and co-directs the psychoanalytic writing curriculum for candidates at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.
