Overview

Dr. Schab attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and at the same time pursued a graduate degree in public health at UC, Berkeley. During his residency in psychiatry at Columbia University, the Dr. Henry P. and M. Page Durkee Laughlin Foundation recognized him as a Distinguished Laughlin Fellow for excellence in clinical care and teaching.
Following graduation from residency, Dr. Schab joined the Columbia faculty and spent a year refining his proficiency in psychopharmacology as an attending psychiatrist on the Schizophrenia Research Unit of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. At the same time, toward expanding his proficiency in psychotherapy, he trained in psychoanalysis at Columbia's Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research and subsequently completed an additional three-year training program in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy. He also served as a Research Psychiatrist in Columbia's Heightened Illness Concern Program, studying treatments for hypochondria. At the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center, Dr. Schab is chair of the Committee on Careers, Identity and Practice, and he sits on the Center's Executive Committee. As a member of the Center's faculty, he teaches in the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Psychoanalysis course.
Dr. Schab's private practice focuses on psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy of mood, anxiety, attention and personality disorders.
Dr. Schab's other medical interests include health care advocacy, and he is an enthusiastic member of Physicians for a National Health Program. He is a member of the New York City Medical Reserve Corps.
