Overview

Dr. Eve E. Slater is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology, and currently precepts in the AIM Clinic. She also serves on the boards of a number of foundations and biotech companies. Most recently she had been senior vice president of worldwide policy at Pfizer, Inc. Prior to that, she served as assistant secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and spent over 19 years with Merck and Co.. At Merck, she was executive director of biochemistry and molecular biology, vice president and senior vice president of clinical and regulatory development, and SVP of external policy. Many of Merck’s drugs, including statins, vaccines, HIV/AIDS medicines received worldwide regulatory approval during her tenure, and she supervised drug safety, during which time no FDA-mandated labeling changes were required. Also reporting to her were the several Merck Manuals and the OTC joint venture with Johnson & Johnson Consumer Pharmaceuticals. She was a member of the U.S. Keystone National Policy Dialogue on HIV, and the NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council.
Eve was appointed Assistant Secretary for Health in 2001, the first woman to hold this Senate-confirmed position, with special contributions in setting electronic health record standards, and authoring the pandemic influenza response. Eve received her BA (Phi Beta Kappa) from Vassar College, her MD (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and residency and fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital where and she was the first woman chief resident in medicine, and later led the hypertension unit, as assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Research

Much opportunity lies within the provisions of ARRA '09 and PPACA '10 for academic medical centers to lead in reforming health care. Moreover, it is our responsibility to devise the research modalities to critically assess reform efforts and to train the next generation of health care professionals in this important work. Dr. Slater is networking within the NYP-Columbia community to identify potential opportunities for grant funding to develop research and training programs by academic medical centers under the Health Innovation Zone, Section 3021 of ARRA '10.
