Mike O’Brien is an experienced audio professional well-versed in all aspects of location sound. In his far-reaching career, Mike has seen and done it all: ENG, EFP, multi-camera live events, and narrative and documentary films.
His broad range of skills covers all aspects of location-based audio engineering, video engineering (including 35+ years of New York Fashion Week live events for top tier and up-and-coming designers), camera operating, and media management. Facile with broadcast systems and digital cinema cameras Mike has mentored scores of new and established audio-video professionals. His professional approach, problem solving, and calm demeanor have resulted in stellar productions for over 35 years.
Mike has contributed to many narrative and documentary films in his career. A few highlights that feature his audio include: Select scenes in?Dick Johnson is Dead,?a feature-length documentary and recipient of the Special Jury Award for Innovation in Non-fiction Storytelling at Sundance;?Lee’s 88 Keys, a feature-length documentary that tells the story of female jazz pianist pioneer, starring the now deceased 88 year-old Lee Shaw and her student, John Medeski, a winner of Best Documentary at the Vero Beach Film Festival;?Into Sunlight, a feature-length documentary of choreography, dance, and storytelling based on the non-fiction work?They Marched into Sunlight; Making Waves The Art of Cinematic Sound, a feature-length documentary nominated at the American Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival; and?Trust, Greed, Bullets & Bourbon a?feature-length narrative starring Max Casella and winner of the Audience Award Best Feature at the New Hollywood Online Film Festival. Mike’s most recent creative projects include selected Metropolitan Museum of Art?Live Arts?performances.
Mike is a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia, where he studied creative writing, foreign language, and art receiving an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
