Research Description
Professor Bergmann’s current research projects include gender and sexuality in early modern Spain and colonial Spanish America, and optics in Hispanic baroque poetry. Recent articles on: madness and poetry in Cervantes; the visual and the aural in the poetry of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz; representations of the nurturing body in early modern Spain; and cross-dressing, gender transgression and violence in early modern Spanish theater.
She is co-editor of: Routledge Research Companion to the Works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (2017); Approaches to Teaching Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (MLA, 2007) Mirrors and Echoes: Women's Writing in Twentieth-Century Spain?(UCPress/IAS, 2007) Entiendes: Queer Readings, Hispanic Writings (Duke, 1995).
