Research Description
Michael Freeling (US geneticist; b. 1945) got his Ph.D. in 1973 at Indiana University with Drew Schwartz (Ch), Marcus Rhoades, Carlos Williams and Robert Briggs, and immediately became a professor at UC Berkeley, where he remains. He has mentored 25 doctoral students, 42 postdocs, was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 1994, and won the McClintock Prize in 2017. The lab’s early work on anaerobic genes and transposons changed to developmental genetics; from 1999 into 2015, ?transposon research was lead by PI Damon Lisch. By 2003, Freeling himself had switched his energies to plant comparative genomics and understanding evolutionary trends, and his funding from NIH to NSF. ? See his Google citation index, and CoGe, an on-line comparative genomics toolbox that originated in the Freeling lab and is now with Eric Lyons at U. Arizona/CyVerse. ?Updated 3/17.?
