Morrill’s research addresses questions of social conflict and change, focusing on dispute resolution, legal mobilization, organizational and cultural dynamics, social movements, school rights, and immigrant entrepreneurial activity. In his empirical research, he is keen to tease out the interrelationships among agency, meaning and structure by using qualitative fieldwork – especially ethnography and narrative interviews – combined with quantitative methods, such as surveys, social network analysis, and experiments.
His books include?Navigating Conflict: How Youth Handle Trouble in a High Poverty School,?co-authored with Michael Musheno (University of Chicago Press);?Together Alone: Personal Relationships in Public Places,?co-edited with David Snow and Cindy White (University of California Press); and?The Executive Way: Conflict Management in Corporations?(University of Chicago Press). His publications appear in the?American Anthropologist, American Journal of Sociology, Annual Review of Law and Social Science, Annual Review of Sociology, Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Law & Social Inquiry, Law & Society Review, Social Problems, University of Chicago Legal Forum,?and many other journals and edited volumes.
His scholarship has received awards from multiple professional associations, including the American Sociological Association, Academy of Management, Pacific Sociological Association, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. In support of his research, Morrill has received grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Kauffman Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and other private foundations. He has served as secretary of the Law & Society Association, chair of the Sociology of Law Section of the American Sociological Association, and is an elected member of the Sociological Research Association, an honorary society.
