季卫东，1957年出生于南昌市。1983年从北京大学法律学系毕业后留学日本，获得京都大学法学博士学位。1990年就任神户大学法学院副教授，1996年升任终身正教授到辞职归国为止。1991年至1992年期间为美国斯坦福大学法学院访问****。自2008年9月到2018年3月担任上海交通大学法学院凯原讲席教授兼院长，现为上海交通大学文科资深教授、日本研究中心主任、中国法与社会研究院院长。2007年入选日本《朝日新闻》综合周刊评定的“最有影响力的100位中国人”、2017年入选《今日中国（China Today）》杂志社评定的“影响中国法治进程的百位法学家”。
曾经被遴选为社会学国际协会法社会学研究委员会（RCSL）指定理事、日本法社会学会理事、亚洲太平洋论坛（淡路会议）研究委员会委员、国际高等研究所企画委员。现兼任神户大学名誉教授、东京财团比较制度研究所研究员、中国经济体制改革研究会公共政策研究部学术委员、中国战略与管理研究会学术委员、教育部法学教育指导委员会副主任、达沃斯世界经济论坛司法全球议程理事会理事、上海交通大学国家海洋战略与权益研究基地理事长。现兼任神户大学名誉教授、上海市行政复议委员会委员、上海仲裁委员会委员、上海市法学会法社会学研究会会长、上海市法治研究会会长、中国法学会法学教育研究会副主任、中国教育三十人论坛成员、最高人民法院应用法学研究所博士后学术指导委员会委员、
国际英文期刊Asian Journal of Law and Society主编、《法治中国丛书》主编等。
