This study, conducted in the context of China, investigates how military background of top executives influences corporate philanthropy. Using a data set of 12,437 firm-year observations from China’s A-share firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges between 2004 and 2013, we find that firms run by military top executives significantly donate less compared to those led by non-military top executives. Moreover, firms with military top executives tend to donate less in less developed markets, indicating that the donation gap between firms with and without military top executives is larger in these markets, especially when firms’ chairmen have military background. These results are robust after adopting propensity score matching (PSM) method to tackle the potential sample selection bias. Our findings with regard to the relationships between corporate philanthropy, military background, and marketization environment provide a new interpretation of military background and have important implications for understanding corporate philanthropy in China and in emerging markets in general.
主讲人简介：
罗进辉，管理学博士，厦门大学管理学院会计系副教授，加拿大阿尔伯塔大学商学院访问学者，入选福建省高等学校新世纪优秀人才支持计划（2015年）和福建省高校杰出青年科研人才培育计划（2015年）。2011年7月起执教于厦门大学管理学院会计系，主要研究方向为公司治理与公司财务，特别是中国资本市场相关问题研究。近年来，在《金融研究》、《会计研究》、《南开管理评论》、《中国会计评论》、《经济管理》、《系统工程理论与实践》、《Management and Organization Review》、《Asia Pacific Journal of Management》等国内外重要学术刊物上发表学术论文30余篇，撰写的案例获得第六届“全国百篇优秀管理案例”奖。博士论文获陕西省优秀博士学位论文奖，现任Asia Pacific Journal of Management杂志（SSCI & 国际B类期刊）编委（2014-2016年）以及《北大商业评论》、《清华管理评论》、《董事会》等知名商业杂志的特约撰稿人和采访专家。目前主持2项国家自然科学基金项目并参与多项国家自然科学基金项目和教育部人文社科重大项目。
