We study how political capture affects the corporate governance role of the media. Relying on a unique media market in China that is characterized by the prevalence of both state-controlled and market-oriented media, we manually construct a comprehensive financial news sample containing 80,008 articles during the 2004–2010 period and provide evidence that negative coverage by the market-oriented media significantly increases the chance of forced top executive turnover, whereas similar coverage by the state-controlled media has no such impact. Tests based on instrumental variable and exogenous experiments provide positive evidence of the causal link.

张博辉，澳大利亚新南威尔士大学金融学教授、国际金融中心副主任。本科毕业于清华大学工程力学专业，硕士毕业于香港科技大学经济学专业，博士毕业于新加波南洋理工大学金融学专业。研究领域主要是国际资本市场（包括资产定价、机构投资者、市场微观结构、财务会计和公司治理等），在Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, Journal of Accounting Research，Review of Financial Studies等顶级期刊发表论文数篇。主持澳大利亚国家研究基金、中国国家自然科学基金、国际金融与监管中心（CIFR）研究基金、新南威尔士大学澳洲商学院研究基金等项目多项。2010年获得新南威尔士大学青年研究学者奖章，并先后获2011 Chinese Finance Association Best Paper Symposium,2012 Chinese Finance Annual Meeting, 2013 Asian Finance Association Annual Meeting, 2013 China International Conference in Finance，2013 Northern Finance Association Conference2014MIT Asia Conference in Accounting, 2014 Asian Finance Association Conference等会议的最佳论文奖。担任Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of International Money and Finance, Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, Managerial Finance, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade,及Accounting and Finance等期刊的匿名审稿人。
