主讲内容:
In this talk, we study the determinants of the size of corruption at the firm-level using the sample of 55,000 companies from the region of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) over the period 2002-2014. In our empirical study we use two main variables related to corruption: corruption perception as an obstacle to doing business and the actual bribe tax payments. Both sets of our empirical results show that, having controlled for other factors, the size of corruption is related mainly to the time spent on dealing with regulations. We argue that the firms that spent more time on dealing with regulations have higher corruption perception and are forced to make significantly higher bribe payments. Therefore, it is essential to simplify the administration procedures in the CEE countries by reducing their number and eliminating the direct contacts of firms with the officials.
