This lecture discusses (1) how the methodology of experimental psycholinguistics, especially those that use electrophysiological and neuroimaging techniques, are applied in the research of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), and (2) what implications the current findings have on foreign language pedagogy. Specifically, by reporting a series of experiments examining the second language learners’ brainwave patterns, this lecture explores an important research topic in SLA, that is, is there a fundamental difference between native speakers’ and adult second language speakers’ real time processing of structure? Could second language speakers, at the most advanced stage of acquisition, process grammar in real time as the native speakers? In addition, based on the current findings, this lecture also explores how the learners’ sensitivity to structure/grammar rule use could be implicitly cultivated in Chinese as foreign language classrooms teaching.
