主讲内容
The internal migration rates in the U.S. have been declining since the 1980s, while the empirical evidence remains inconclusive. This paper finds that (local) social networks plays an important role in causing this persistent decline in workers' mobility. Using data from the American Community Survey, we measure the importance of local networks by their effectiveness in finding a job. In fact, the ease of applying for jobs virtually may make local social networks more important in the actual hiring decision. Based on this finding, we show that people's increasing awareness of the importance of social networks results in the declining internal migration in the U.S.
