Abstract: Over 60 million children under the age of 18 are left behind by their parents in rural China. I examine the impact of migration by rural men on the educational attainment of their left-behind children in rural China. The importance of migratory duration and the timing of migration are addressed. Using survey data collected from six provinces in China, I found that comparing to children in households with no migrant parents, children in households with migrant father have lower probability of being enrolled in school. In addition, the effect shows an interesting oscillating pattern: paternal migration when the child is young, especially still a infant, increases school enrollment later, but migration before birth and when the child is older, especially after school age, decreases school enrollment. I provide a possible explanation for this pattern of the effects. Paternal migration has sizable cumulative effect, and both median- and long-term migration decreases school enrollment significantly, while short-term migration has an insignificant effect.
