内容提要:

This paper develops a decomposition-based solution procedure to solve a large-scale nonlinear spatial equilibrium model of U.S. agricultural and transportation fuel sectors. We derive lower and upper bounds on the value of the objective function at each step of the decomposition, and use the percentage deviation between the two bounds as the guidance to terminate the decomposition solution procedure. Empirical results show that the decomposition-based solution procedure developed in this study can reduce solution time of the model at the Crop Reporting District (CRD) level by more than 95% compared to the standard solution approaches. It can solve the county-level model which could not be solved directly by existing commercial optimization solvers due to its sheer size and nonlinearity involved in the objective function. Effects of U.S. biofuel mandate on U.S. commodity markets and land use are discussed.
