Abstract: Placental disfunction can lead to placental-derived diseases such as early abortion or preeclampsia and limited intrauterine growth. Special pathogens such as Plasmodium falciparum can also cause damage to foetal and (or) maternal health after invading the placenta. The extracellular matrix (ECM) of placental synthetic trophoblastic cells extends outward from placental chorionic villi to the maternal blood, regulating and maintaining the invasion of endometrium behavior of trophoblastic cells at the molecular level. Proteoglycan (PG) is one of the main components of ECM. The diversified functions of PG are mainly due to the complex glycosamine chain sequence and sulphurication patterns attached to its core proteins, as well as the unique properties and dynamic expression of core proteins. Quantitative and qualitative changes in PG can reflect the severity of system disorders and the participation of the host system. This review summarises the expression and function of PG in placental-borne diseases, which may be reliable biomarkers in placental-borne diseases.
