Abstract: Objective To observe the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with scalp acupuncture in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 60 patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment, who were admitted to the Department of Rehabilitation, Shengjing Hospital, China Medical University from January 2021 to March 2022. The patients were divided into a control group (received scalp acupuncture treatment, n=29) and an observation group (received rTMS combined with scalp acupuncture treatment, n=31). The scores of Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT), modified Barthel index (MBI), and insomnia severity index (ISI) before and after the treatment were compared between the two groups, and the levels of cognitive function, sleep state, and daily living ability were evaluated. Results In both groups, the scores of MMSE, MoCA, RBMT, and MBI were significantly higher and those of ISI were significantly lower after treatment compared to before treatment (P < 0.05), indicating that the levels of cognitive function, sleep state, and daily living ability after treatment were significantly improved (P < 0.05). Additionally, the improvements in the scores of MMSE, orientation in MoCA, and MBI after treatment were significantly greater in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion rTMS combined with scalp acupuncture can improve cognitive impairment, quality of sleep, and quality of life after stroke.
Key words: repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, scalp acupuncture, post-stroke cognitive impairment
