Abstract: Objective To investigate the improvement of anxiety, depression, and prognosis in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) after the modified Broström-Gould procedure. Methods A retrospective questionnaire survey was conducted on 140 CAI patients who had undergone the modified Broström-Gould procedure, including the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS), the Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI), and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society's(AOFAS) Ankle-Hindfoot Scale. Patients were followed up with the same questionnaire before surgery, and at 3 and 6 months after surgery. The results were statistically analyzed. Results The incidence of anxiety and depression in preoperative CAI patients was 29.2% and 37.5%. The anxiety, depression, pain, sleep disturbance, and ankle function of CAI patients improved significantly after the modified Broström-Gould procedure at 3 months(P < 0.001). The improvement of postoperative anxiety and depression in CAI patients was positively correlated with their degree of pain, sleep quality, and ankle joint function(P < 0.05). Conclusion CAI patients have obvious anxiety and depression. The modified Broström-Gould procedure may improve the anxiety, depression, and prognosis of CAI patients significantly. Therefore, CAI patients should undergo surgery as soon as possible.
