Abstract: Major depressive disorder(MDD) is a highly heterogeneous disease with complex pathophysiology and unclear pathogenesis. Genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and biological systems all play a role in the pathogenesis of MDD. The gut microbiota refers to the large number of microorganisms co-inhabiting the gastrointestinal ecosystem. The gut microbiota can interact with the host through the gut-brain axis, a two-way communication information system. Imbalance of the gut microbiota may be associated with the onset of MDD. This article reviews the role of gut microbiota in the development of MDD and new treatment methods.
Key words: major depressive disorder, gut microbiota, gut-brain axis
