Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between hospital violence and depressive symptoms experienced by medical staff in order to provide a theoretical basis for improving their mental health. Methods A total of 1 300 medical staff were selected from 7 hospitals in 3 cities in Liaoning province, between August and October 2016. Questionnaires were administered to medical staff, included those relating to personal characteristics, the Workplace Violence Scale, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). A total of 1 032 valid questionnaire responses were used for data analysis. The effects of hospital violence and depressive symptoms were explored using logistic regression analysis. Results Among participants,69.4% reported an experience of hospital violence, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 67.5% among medical staff. Steady monthly income and hospital violence-related laws and regulations,as well as training in handling these situations, were protective factors for the occurrence of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, physical assault, emotional abuse, verbal sexual harassment, and physical sexual assault were considered risk factors for medical staff. Conclusion Experiences of hospital violence seriously impact medical staff's mental health. Accordingly, managers and relevant hospital departments should investigate ways to reduce this risk.
Key words: medical staff, depressive symptoms, hospital violence
