Abstract: Objective To study the clinical characteristics of serum bilirubin, uric acid, and albumin levels in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and their correlation with cognitive function. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 69 patients with AD and 67 healthy controls. We collected data on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and serum total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, uric acid, and albumin levels from the patients in the two groups. Subsequently,we compared the biochemical indicators to determine whether statistically significant differences exist between the two groups, and multiple regression analysis was performed among the MMSE scores and serum levels of bilirubin, uric acid, and albumin. Results Significant differences in serum bilirubin and albumin levels, but not serum uric acid level, were found between the two groups. The MMSE scores in the AD group negatively correlated with age and the serum total bilirubin level. A positive correlation was observed between direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, and serum albumin levels. After controlling for various factors, the MMSE scores significantly correlated with age, history of hypertension, and serum uric acid and albumin levels. Conclusion Serum total, direct, and indirect bilirubin levels may be the only risk factors of AD,but they are not independent risk factors. Serum albumin level may be an independent risk factor of AD. Serum uric acid level has a two-way effect on oxidative stress, and this study supports the hypothesis that relatively high levels of serum uric acid level may contribute to the development and progression of AD.
