Abstract: Objective We aimed to study the effect of glutamate AMPA/kainate receptor antagonist CNQX on tail amputation induced c-fos gene expression in the anterior cingulate cortex neurons of mice. Methods CNQX was injected into the caudal vein or subarachnoid space. The effect of CNQX on gene expression at 0.5 h after cutting 2.5 cm of the tail extremity was studied using immunohistochemistry. Results In the control group,a small amount of c-fos gene was expressed in the anterior cingulate cortex neurons. However,the expression of c-fos in the anterior cingulate cortex neurons of mice increased significantly 0.5 h after tail amputation;this increase was antagonized by CNQX injection into the caudal vein or subarachnoid space. Conclusion Glutamate peripheral and central AMPA/kainate receptors are involved in tail amputation induced increase in c-fos gene expression in the anterior cingulate cortex neurons of mice.
