Abstract: Objective To study the stress and psychological status of the main caregivers of children with hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and to analyze the related factors affecting their psychological status. Methods A total of hundred primary caregivers of hand-foot-andmouth disease patients in the Department of Infectious Diseases,Shengjing Hospital,China Medical University, from October 2017 to October 2018 were selected as research subjects. The data were collected by filling out questionnaires. Self-rating depression scale (SDS) was used to assess the psychological status of the main caregivers of children with hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the related factors affecting the psychological status of caregivers. Results There were no significant differences in the SDS scores of caregivers with regard to the children's gender, whether it was an only child or not,and activity of daily living (ADL) scores (P>0.05). However, there were significant differences in SDS scores with regard to the children's age, condition, and treatment cycle (P<0.05). For caregivers, there were no significant differences in SDS scores in terms of their gender, age, health status, working status, payment, method of medical fees, and whether they would seek medical treatment elsewhere (P>0.05). There were significant differences in the SDS scores of caregivers with regard to their educational level, marital status, relationship to the children, care time, and monthly income (P<0.05). The children's condition, low educational background of caregivers, long care time, and low monthly income were the risk factors for mental depression (P<0.05). Conclusion The main caregivers of children with hand-foot-and-mouth disease suffer from physiological, psychological, family, economic, social, and other pressures. Severe illness, low educational background of caregivers, long time of care, and low monthly income are the risk factors for psychological depression among caregivers.
