曾任国家重点基础研究发展计划(“973”)项目首席科学家,先后主持国家****基金项目、国家自然基金重点项目、中科院创新工程重要方向性项目和中国科学院战略性先导科技专项(B)项目。联合发起并主持中德和中英等重大国际合作项目、国际地质对比计划(IGCP 512)和新元古代大陆钻探计划(ICDP: GRIND-ECT)等。主持组织包括“第四届寒武纪地质大会”等10余次国际学术会议,近年来应邀在重要国际学术会议上做大会报告10余次。

科研成果:
发表和合作发表论文230余篇(含Nature、Science、PNAS、Geology等NI论文30余篇)、专著3部,主编论文专集14部。多项成果入选国内外教科书。
主要学术贡献包括:(1)系统开展了新元古代-寒武纪综合地层学研究,首次建立全球寒武纪碳同位素(δ13C)地层曲线,提出并修订埃迪卡拉纪和寒武纪全球和区域年代地层标准。与国内外同行合作,在华南成冰系顶部和底部附近获得高精度锆石U-Pb同位素年龄,证实新元古代大规模冰期(雪球事件)在全球同时快速发生(716 Ma)和结束(635 Ma),为论证雪球事件假说提供可靠年代学证据,两个年龄值先后被国际年代地层表采用作为厘定成冰系和埃迪卡拉系底界的标准年龄。(2)联合获得多项重要化石发现,改写了多细胞真核生物、多细胞生物和动物在寒武纪之前的演化历史,部分发现先后入选“中国基础研究十大新闻”(2007),中国地质学会 “十大地质科技进展”(2016)和中国古生物学会 “中国古生物学十大进展”(2016,2019),Science 杂志2015年“十大科学新闻图片”。(3)长期组织和参与华南寒武纪四大特异埋藏化石群(梅树村动物群、澄江动物群、关山动物群和凯里动物群)的野外发掘、化石系统学、埋藏学和定量群落生态学研究,为揭示动物在寒武纪早期快速起源演化(寒武纪大爆发)的规模和本质提供重要依据。(4)通过多学科交叉和国内外合作,提出动物寒武纪大爆发多幕式演化模型,揭示寒武纪大爆发的多幕式辐射和灭绝过程与碳同位素异常和海洋氧化还原演变之间的耦合关系,其中氧气是控制寒武纪大爆发过程的关键因素。认为大规模造山运动将大量蒸发岩输入海洋是导致前寒武纪普遍缺氧的深部大洋在埃迪卡拉纪中晚期发生氧化的关键原因。联合提出并论证了底栖动物的生物扰动作用是距今5.2亿年以来地球-生命系统维持稳定的关键机制,标志着现代地球-生命系统的形成。这些研究为推动我国该领域向地球-生命系统科学方向上的发展做出贡献。
