Biography Biography
Prof Lee received his B.S. (1972) and M.S. degrees (1979) from Seoul National University and Ph.D. degree (1986) in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University. He has been a professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology since 1987. He was a visiting professor of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from August 2017 to January 2018. Prof Lee joined Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as an adjunct professor in January 2019.? He has contributed more than 660 technical articles, including over 180 international journal papers and gave more than 100 times plenary, keynote and invited lectures at the international conferences, distinguished research institutes and universities. His research areas are subsonic, transonic and supersonic aeroelasticity of modern aircrafts and helicopters, vibration and structural analysis of aerospace structures, vibration and control of smart Structures, vibration - damping and control of composite structures. Prof. Lee supervised more than 100 students including 50 Ph.D. students. He was the editor-in-chief of International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sciences (IJASS).
Prof. Lee was a Director of KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center from January 2012 to February 2014. During his director position, he directed the successful launch of Naro Scientific Satellite. He was the Chairman of two times of Failure Investigation Committee of Naro Space Launch Vehicles from 2009 to 2013. His activities and leadership led a successful launch of the 3rd?Naro Rocket in 2013, which is the first successful space launch in Space Launch History in Korea. Prof. Lee Received a Medal (3rd Place) from Korean President due to the contribution to the academic excellence and the development of aerospace Engineering in 2008. He also received a Medal (2nd Place) from Korean President due to the contribution to development of Space Launch Vehicle and Satellite in 2013. Prof. Lee received a Friendship Award from Nanjing City, China in 2010. He also received a Friendship Award and an Honorary Citizenship from Jiangsu Province in 2011. He received the Friendship Award from Chinese Government in 2011, which is one of the most honorable Award from Chinese Government.
Prof. Lee was the president of Korean Society for Composite Materials in 2003-2004 and also the president of Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences in 2006-2007. He was also a Director International (Board Member) of AIAA from 2011 to 2014. Professor Lee is currently a Fellow of AIAA and a Fellow of Royal Aeronautical Society. He is a fellow of Korean Academy of Science and Technology and also a fellow of National Academy of Engineering in Korea. He is also an honorary professor at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
