Hon-Lun Helan Yang is Professor of Music at Hong Kong Baptist University. Yang’s research is cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, ranging from nineteenth-century American symphonic music to contemporary Chinese music, both “serious” and “popular” in style and appeal. She has received numerous research grants, including two General Research Fund (GRF) grants from the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong.
Yang is the co-editor of the recently released volume China and the West: Music, Representation, and Reception (University of Michigan Press, 2017), to which she also contributed two chapters. She is the author of over forty articles, which appeared in journals such as Asian Music, Music and Politics, CHIME, American Music, and BLOK and in the following monographs: Composing for the State (Ashgate, 2016), The Oxford Handbook of Music Censorship (2015), Music and Protest in 1968 (Cambridge University Press, 2013), and Music and Politics (Ashgate, 2013), to name some of the most recent ones.
In 2015, Yang received the Certificate of Commendation from the Secretary for Home Affairs of Hong Kong for making outstanding contributions to the development of arts and culture. She is currently working on a number of projects, including a co-authored volume with Simo Mikkonen and John Winzenburg entitled Networking the Russian Diaspora: Russian Musical Activities and Musicians in Interwar Shanghai (on advance contract by the University of Hawaii Press) as well as on a book on cover songs and creativity.
