Programme Information

The Programme is research-oriented and a student may be required to enrol in formal courses as deemed necessary. All students must meet their Supervisors for prescription of courses every academic year before course selection.

Students have to fulfil the qualifying examination requirement before they submit their dissertations.

  • Historical Musicology
  • Theory

Tuition Fee
HK$42,100 per annum regardless of the study mode
Admission Requirements

In additional to the general requirements of the Graduate School,

Ethnomusicology

  • Applicants should have majored in ethnomusicology, musicology, anthropology, or another related field.
  • All Ethnomusicology students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in Chinese and English. Ability to use a language other than Chinese and English, for research purposes, may be required.

Historical Musicology

  • Applicants should have majored in musicology or another related field.
  • Ability to use a language other than Chinese and English, for research purposes, is required for all Historical Musicology students.

Theory

  • Applicants should have majored in music theory, musicology, or another related field.
  • Ability to use a language other than Chinese and English, for research purposes, is required for all Theory students.

Applicants should submit:

1. a curriculum vitae (must use the template which can be downloaded from the Music Department's website: www.cuhk.edu.hk/mus);

2. a copy of Master’s thesis and/or other research papers and publications;

3. a research proposal written in English (3,000 - 4,000 words) that covers the following areas:

a) statement of research problems and issues

b) aims and objectives

c) literature review

d) methodology

e) chapter outline (optional)

f) research schedule (optional);

4. bibliography; and

attend an interview (shortlisted applicants).

HKPFS Application Deadline
(for PhD programmes only)

1 December 2017
1.  By 12:00 noon (Hong Kong time) - to submit an initial application to RGC; and
2. By 5:00 p.m. (Hong Kong time) - to submit full application to CUHK
