Students are required to write a research thesis which will make an original contribution to English literary studies. They are expected to have an excellent command of English, the official language of the thesis, as well as an additional language other than English and Chinese. In addition to the thesis, students must pass a qualifying examination within the first year of study before they can be advanced to PhD candidature.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should have majored in Literature or subjects in a related field. Applicants who do not hold a Master’s degree awarded by this University or a recognized university are required to complete the first-year course of study of the MPhil programme before they are considered for admission.

- Sample of a research paper (5,000-7,000 words);
- Research proposal (1,500 words)
