摘要The goals of neurological monitoring are to detect changes in cerebral haemodynamics, cerebral oxygenation and neuronal function. Advances in technology over the last few decades, have produced many new monitors of neurological function, some of which are now available for clinical use. This article is the first of two parts and focuses on the measurement of the anaesthetic state and cerebral blood flow. Two monitors are described which may be of value in determining depth of anaesthesia (bispectral index and auditory-evoked potentials) and three techniques are described for measuring cerebral blood flow (transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, laser Doppler flowmetry and stable xenon enhanced computed tomography). The potential clinical applications and possible limitations of these new monitoring methods are discussed.
