Introduction

Hsuan-Ying Huang received his Ph.D. in medical anthropology from Harvard University in 2013. Before studying anthropology, he received medical education and psychiatric training at National Taiwan University and its medical center. Huang's research has focused on the rise of Western-style psychotherapy in urban China – a trend that he coins as "psycho-boom." Seeing this boom as a unique constellation in which state interests, middle-class aspirations, and market developments intertwine, he is interested in how its participants grapple with the imported knowledge to explore various aspects of their subjectivities, and how they work together to construct a new mental health profession. He joined the Department of Anthropology at CUHK in the Spring of the 2015-2016 academic year, after a postdoctoral fellowship at the Australian Centre on China in the World, the Australian National University.
