BiographyProf. Jr-Hau He received his BS and PhD degrees at National Tsing Hua University in 1999 and 2005, respectively. He has been an influential scientist in optoelectronics. He has made a major contribution to understanding light-mater interaction, which reflects on his achievement of photon management on the light harvesting devices. He has conducted highly interdisciplinary researches to bridge those gaps between various research fields and between academia and industry. The great success of his research is reflected by his research funding, publications, awards, honors, patent and technology transfer to industry. He has grants received: > US$ 11M and garnered >12000 citations for a body of work consisted of >240 peer reviewed journal articles and >20 patents with 61 of H factor over his career and over 200 presentations in international conferences. The nanotechnology he has developed has been transferred constantly to energy and LED industry over the world.
Prof. He is a pioneer of the photon management for boosting the optoelectronic devices. He published the important results in the light-matter interaction (Energy Environ. Sci. 4, 2863-2869 (2011); Energy Environ. Sci. 4, 3436-3441 (2011)), setting the foundations of the Black Si and later having obtained the groundbreaking device results by photon management. His pioneering research in optoelectronics began with the introduction of the giant optical enhancement with photon management in Si heterojunction solar cells using various hierarchical structures to achieve the efficiencies of 15.1% (nanowires on micropyramids), 15.2% (micropyramids on microgrooves), 14.6% (inverted pyramids) and 16.55% (graphene quantum dot as downconverters). (ACS Nano 7, 9325 (2013); ACS Nano 8, 2959 (2014); Nano Energy 23, 1 (2016); Nano Lett. 16, 309 (2016)). By employing the photon management, he published a series of pioneering results, demonstrating a world-record-high efficiency of Si hybrid solar cells (11% in 2013 and 13% in 2016). (Nano Lett. 13, 3658 (2013); ACS Nano 10, 815 (2016)). Dr. He applied the photon management to the solar water splitting using Si heterojunctions (Nano Lett. 15, 2817 (2015); Proc Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 112, 3612 (2015); Nature Mater. 14, 1245 (2015); Adv. Mater. 27, 6511 (2015); Ange. Chem. Int. Ed., 55,13104, 2016). Dr. He has pioneered the field of optoelectronics of 2D materials by employing the photon management (Science 350, 1065 (2015); Science 349, 524 (2015); Nano Lett. 15, 1356 (2015); ACS Nano 8, 8317 (2014); Scientific reports 4, 3826 (2014)), to a significant degree, determining the development of the field. These works enjoyed wide experimental and theoretical following, accumulating thousand references. Today the photon management is a thriving field with many new phenomena and optoelectronic applications. Dr. He exploits rich experiences in industry-university collaborations.
He participates actively in activities and services in scientific professional societies. He serves as a member of the editorial board for numerous prestigious journals, and as a chair, co-chair, and a member of technical and steering committees for national and international symposiums. He is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) Newsletter. He serves as IEEE Electron Device Society (EDS) and NTC Distinguished Lecturer, SPIE Visiting Lecturer and OSA Travelling Lecturer. He is a Fellow of OSA, RSC and SPIE, and a senior member of IEEE.
