Biomedical Engineering focuses on using engineering principles, techniques and design concepts for healthcare purposes. There is an increasing demand for education and development in the field to improve healthcare and quality of life. The demand has driven the need for developing professionals who will advance the evolution of modern healthcare system, treatment and technology. The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (MSBME) Programme aims to offer education and training opportunity to engineers to pursue higher-level study in biomedical field to promote engineering to future healthcare applications.
Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs):
- EXPLORE appropriate scientific and technological development in healthcare related industry that is of benefit to the society;
- ADDRESS the issues and challenges related to the development of biomedical instruments, systems and devices;
- APPLY state-of-the-art technologies to generate creative solutions to improve healthcare products by using biomedical approach;
- APPLY knowledge of designing, implementing, manufacturing and evaluating equipment that can advance biomedical engineering practice.
Applicants must satisfy the University's General Entrance Requirements and the following programme entrance requirements:
- hold a degree in engineering, science, or equivalent; or
- be qualified for graduate membership of a professional institution; or
- other degrees will be considered on a case-by-case basis by a committee of experts.
Note: Priority will be given to those applicants who have biomedical engineering/science or bioengineering related academic background.
English Proficiency Requirement
Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:
- TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
- Overall band score 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
- Score 450 in the College English Test (CET-6); or
- Other equivalent qualifications.
Students may obtain the MSc degree by completing (30 credits units) :
- 5 core courses + 5 elective taught courses, or
- 5 core courses + the dissertation + 2 elective taught courses
15 credit units of Core Courses + 15 credit units of Elective Courses
Core Courses (15 credit units)
Take all (12 credit units) as below:
- Biomedical-instrumentation
- Biomedical Photonics
- Manufacturing of Biomedical Devices
- Micro Systems Technology
And select one course (3 credit units) from below:
- Biomedical Engineering Design #
- Biomedical-safety and Risk Assessment Δ
# Recommended for students who do not have biomedical engineering/science or bioengineering background
Δ Recommended for students who have biomedical engineering/science or bioengineering background
Elective Courses (15 credit units)

@ If student takes both MBE6022 Project Development Study and MBE6008 Dissertation, the student may further pursue the case topic explored in the former course by substantially enhancing the study with new and advanced research work towards achieving the project objectives.
* Full-time students who want to complete dissertation in 1 semester must get prior approval from Supervisor and Programme Leader with CGPA >= 3.5
-
The programme utilizes a variety of learning modes and methods, including the followings:
-
Lectures and Tutorials
-
Co-operative Learning
-
Seminars, Interactive Workshops & Panel Discussions offered by external, as well as by international experts, and active professionals working in the industry
-
- Students can bring their problems from work to class for team discussions and further analysis, and earn course credits upon satisfactory results.
* If student opts for taking dissertation to complete the programme study, the normal duration for graduation will be 1.5 years.
