BenBoerwasappointedasEmeritusProfessorinlate2008.Between2006and2008,hewastheinternationalCo-DirectoroftheIUCN(InternationalUnionfortheConservationofNature)AcademyofEnvironmentalLawandVisitingProfessorbasedattheUniversityofOttawa,whilecontinuingtoteachpart-timeintheMasterofEnvironmentalLawattheUniversityofSydney.WithhisdeparturefromCanada,hewasappointedasanhonoraryAdjunctProfessorattheUniversityofOttawa.InhisnewroleasEmeritusProfessorattheUniversityofSydney,BenwillcontinuetoteachinvariousunitsofstudyintheMaster’sprogramattheUniversityofSydney.
Formerly,hewasProfessorinEnvironmentalLaw,UniversityofSydney(1997-2008)andtheCorrsChambersWestgarthProfessorofEnvironmentalLaw,UniversityofSydney(1992-1996).Priortothat,atMacquarieUniversity,hewasLecturer,SeniorLecturerandAssociateProfessor,SchoolofLaw(1979-1991)andpart-timeLecturerinGraduateSchooloftheEnvironment,,andTutorandLecturer,DepartmentofLegalStudies,LaTrobeUniversity(1974-1979).
TogetherwithcolleaguesattheAustralianNationalUniversityandtheUniversityofAdelaide,hewasafoundingdirectoroftheAustralianCentreforEnvironmentalLaw.AttheUniversityofSydney,thisbodyisnowcalledtheAustralianCentreforClimateandEnvironmentalLaw.
Benhasservedasaconsultanttovariousintergovernmentalandnon-governmentalorganisationsinthefollowingcountries:China,FederatedStatesofMicronesia,India,Indonesia,Kenya,Nepal,NewCaledonia,Singapore,SolomonIslands,SriLanka,TrinidadandTobago,VietnamandSamoa,aswellasconductingresearchforvariousdepartmentsoftheAustralianFederalGovernment.
