2013 UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER 2+2 INFORMATION SHEET
What is this programme?
This programme is a collaboration between SYSU and The University of Manchester. It allows students currently in their second year at SYSU to spend 2 years of their degree studying at the The University of Manchester. During these final two years students will have the opportunity to improve their English language skills and knowledge of English culture by studying in one of the top 5 universities in the UK. Students will be able to study modules covering a vast range of topics across both English language and linguistics taught by academic staff world-renowned for their expertise. Topics include: English dialects, business English, linguistics of American English, language contact, gender and language, TESOL and there is also the opportunity to complete a dissertation with one-to-one supervision from Manchester’s academic staff. After successfully completing their course of study, students will be awarded with a degree from SYSU and another one from Manchester, the details of which are described as follows:

What is the tuition fee?
Tuition fees for international students will be £13,000 per annum. For general information please see the undergraduate fees pages.
Scholarships of £2500 is available in second year if you achieve an average grade of 60% or above (equivalent to 2.1) in Yr 3.

Admission Process
• By 20 March, SYSU will admit students to its own programme(s), with students who meet the agreed criteria having the option of applying, as individuals, to complete their final 2 years at UoM during their second year. • By 30 April: UoM will make/refuse a conditional offer. (曼大发放有条件录取通知书或拒录通知书)
• By 15 July: students to submit the 4th semester transcript together with any outstanding documents such as IELTS (学生递交第四学期的成绩单,以及补齐所欠材料如雅思成绩)
• 20 July : UoM confirm and issue unconditional offer; visa application (曼大发放无条件录取通知书;学生开始申请签证)
• 16 September : registration at UoM and welcome week (学生入学登记,新学年开始)
 
Admission Criteria
a) Any student currently studying in their 2nd year who has studied at least 3 of the following topics: (applying to 2011 September entry)*
English Grammar
English Phonetic
Introduction to Linguistics or Lexicology or
Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese
 
* For those who a have not studied English Grammar, Phonetics or Introduction to Linguistics or Lexicology, they will be asked to complete prior reading[1] before starting in September and taking some compulsory course units in their first year at Manchester. Detailed information will be provided once conditional offers are being made.
 
b) An average grade of 75% across all CORE units, (i.e. not necessarily in every core unit). Students with narrow fails to achieve an average grade of 75% may apply to UoM for guidance.
 
c) An IELTS overall band score of 7.0* (each component no less than 5.5), paper-based TOEFL 600 overall (and TWE of 5.5), internet-based TOEFL 100 overall, computer based TOEFL 250 overall, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English grade B, Cambridge Certificate of proficiency in English grade C or WELT score of BBB.
 
* Students who achieve IELTS 6.5 may still apply to UoM. If UoM makes an offer, the student will be required to complete a 10-week pre-sessional English course at UoM, at the student’s expense.
 
[1] A list of reading titles will be sent to students in advance if they meet UoM entry requirements. It is not a test nor a course. Students will be asked to read a textbook or some articles on a particular topic.
