中国科学院广州生物医药与健康研究院首任创始院长（2004-2008）、研究员、博士生导师，国家****科学基金（外籍）获得者。曾先后担任了葛兰素史克公司（GlaxoSmithKline）全球研发副总裁、法国赛诺菲公司(Sanofi)全球研发副总裁。2013年起担任呼吸疾病国家重点实验室研究员，中国科学院广州生物医药与健康研究院特聘研究员，广州医科大学教授，华侨大学教授。研究工作与科研兴趣涉及生物医药的前沿领域，包括传染病、代谢疾病、癌症等疾病的药物开发和疫苗研究。在国际一流科学期刊Nature, Nature communication，Journal of Clinical Investigation,Advanced science,Journal of Virology, Vaccine, Journal of Biology Chemistry, Cancer Research等发表了70多篇论文。在过去五年 (2015-现在)作为通讯作者累计影响因子超过150。申请了多项国内/国际专利。
1979-1985就读于上海第一医学院医学系，1984年考取赴美留学CUSBEA项目。1985-1991年在美国印第安那大学（Indiana University）医学院生物化学和分子生物学系主攻生物化学和分子生物学，获博士学位。1992-1993年在美国哈佛大学医学院(Harvard Medical School)及Dana-Farber癌症研究所从事博士后研究。1994-1996年在哈佛大学医学院担任讲师(Instructor)、1997-2001年在美国默克（Merck）制药公司担任资深研究员（Senior Research Fellow）。主要成果包括默克实验室的艾滋病疫苗的第一发明人, 该疫苗曾被专家评为最具希望成功的艾滋病疫苗,并进入大规模临床II期试验。共获得艾滋病疫苗，癌症的分子化疗，人类乳突状瘤病毒和子宫颈癌疫苗等约二十多项国际专利发明。研究工作涉及生物医药的前沿领域，包括癌症、传染病等疾病的药物开发和疫苗研究。在国际一流科学期刊Nature,Nature Communications, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Cancer Research, Journal of Virology, Vaccine等发表了一百余篇具有应用及转化医学价值的论文。
