　主要经历：曾就读于西北师范大学、山东大学、和美国哈佛大学。1990年获得哈佛大学比较文学博士，先后执教于美国柏克利加州大学、密西根大学和哥伦比亚大学。现任职位是哥伦比亚大学终身人文讲席教授及清华大学中文系的双聘教授。曾获奖项包括美国古根海姆（GuggenheimFellowship)大奖、以及美国人文研究所（NationalHumanitiesCenter）年度奖和柏林高等研究所（WissenschaftskollegzuBerlin)年度奖。目前担任AdvisoryCommitteeofthejournalPMLA;AdvisoryBoardofWritingTechnologies,UK;ExecutiveCommitteeoftheDivisionforComparativeStudiesin18th-CenturyLiteratureattheModernLanguagesAssociation;EditorialBoardofthejournalpositions:eastasiaculturescritique;EditorialBoardofModernChineseLiteratureandCulture等。
