环境工程学与环境水质学专家。籍贯河北徐水。1958年毕业于哈尔滨工业大学。1984-1985年瑞士水资源与水污染控制研究所访问研究****。1995年当选为中国工程院院士。现任中国科学院生态环境研究中心研究员、学术委员会主任。
开拓我国环境水质学领域,建立"环境水质学国家重点实验室"。先后从事蓟运河汞污染,湘江镉污染,鄱阳湖铜污染等重金属形态、评价及治理研究。参加中国工程院全国及西北水资源战略研究。在我国率先研究无机高分子絮凝理论和絮凝剂,主持建立聚合氯化铝现代生产厂,创立稳定化聚合氯化铁工艺。广泛开展微界面水质过程和表面络合计算模式,吸附絮凝理论,高效水处理工艺技术,有机有毒物吸附及控制,环境纳米材料生态效应等研究。主持完成多项国家及国际合作研究项目,获国家自然科学二等奖和科技进步二等奖,何梁何利奖及美国SCI经典论文奖等多次奖项。先后发表专著及论文300余篇。培养研究生50余名。
