青藏高原及周边地区被誉为称世界“第三极”。第三极地区“冰冻圈-大气圈-水圈-生物圈-岩石圈-人类圈”多圈层之间错综复杂的相互作用对于区域乃至全球的气候、水循环和生物多样性研究具有重要的意义,从而显著影响青藏高原及周边地区的社会和经济发展。在全球变暖的背景下,这一地区正显著变化。姚檀栋院士和他的研究小组一直致力于第三极环境变化研究。他把降水中的氧稳定同位素作为温度变化的代用指标,并发现氧稳定同位素代表了青藏高原北部局部大气过程和青藏高原南部大范围海洋过程。他曾十几次带领科考队赴青藏高原钻取冰芯。他通过代用指标,如氧稳定同位素等研究冰芯记录,揭示了青藏高原的气候和环境变化,并发现过去30年是自1900年以来最暖的时期,过去的100年是过去2000年以来最暖的时期。他利用大规模的实地观测、分析卫星图像和遥感数据,并应用数值模拟测算青藏高原冰川变化。他对整个青藏高原的研究揭示了西风和印度季风相互作用的三种模态:青藏高原北部的西风模态、青藏高原南部的印度季风模态和青藏高原中部的过渡模态。这样一种独特的环流模态直接影响青藏高原及其周边地区在当前气候变化下的冰川状况。他的研究发现,季风模态主导下的青藏高原南部的冰川出现最大规模退缩;过渡模态主导的青藏高原中部的冰川出现中度退缩,西风模态主导下高原西北部地区冰川退缩很小,甚至有冰川处于前进状态。因此,他提出西风的加强和季风的减弱是青藏高原及其周边地区目前冰川状况的主要驱动力。这些研究成果产出了200余篇论文,并发表在包括Nature、Nature Climate Change、Review of Geophysics、PNAS在内的国际期刊上。在国际青藏高原研究领域,他的论文总量和总被引率排名第一。他通过青藏高原降水稳定同位素揭示印度季风与西风相互作用的三种模态的论文是2013年第4期Review of Geophysics的封面文章。他关于冰芯环境记录的论文被Nature期刊作为研究亮点报道(doi:10.1038/nchina.2008. 265)。他发表在Nature Climate Change期刊上的关于冰川变化的研究被Nature期刊专题报道(doi:10.1038/nature.2012.11010)。Nature期刊认为姚檀栋院士是该领域的先行者,是“少数几个在艰苦条件下收集青藏高原过去气候历史资料的研究人员之一” (Volume 454, 2008) 。Science期刊高度评价他的研究是“解决高海拔环境变化问题领域最出色的研究活动的典范”。他成长为国际知名冰川学家的历程Nature期刊曾进行了专题报导(Volume 472, 2011)。
