1942年8月20日出生于上海市。1968年研究生毕业于华东理工大学，1977-1979年在德国马普学会海德堡研究所Staab教授实验室进修。1985-1986年为德国马普学会海德堡研究所Staab教授实验室访问教授。1992-2000年任中科院化学所所长，兼任中国科学院有机固体开放实验室主任。2000年任国家自然科学基金委员会副主任。并担任国家超导专家委员会委员、国务院学位委员会学科评审组成员、中国科学院学位委员会委员、以及中国化学会理事长等职。
