研究领域从事全球变化压力下森林生态系统的响应及适应性研究。近年来开展了我国南亚热带森林C、N、P循环过程和土壤主要温室气体通量对大气氮沉降的响应研究,发现:1)氮沉降显著降低南亚热带季风阔叶林土壤呼吸和氧化吸收CH4的能力、促进土壤其N2O的排放,影响程度取决于土壤N状况及森林演替阶段;2)结合凋落物分解速率,证明了氮沉降是我国南亚热带成熟林土壤可持续积累有机碳(Zhou et al., 2006, Science)的可能原因之一;3)揭示了氮沉降可增加南亚热带地区豆科人工林(大叶相思)土壤N2O排放,而适量磷肥施用可缓解由大气N沉降引起的N2O温室潜能(Zhang et al., 2014, Biogeosciences);4)首次提出“传统的林下模拟氮沉降实验方法绕过了林冠对N的吸收、吸附、转化等截留过程,可能高估了N素对土壤及灌层生理生态过程的影响程度”(Zhang et al., 2015, Scientific Reports),并设计建成了“林冠模拟氮沉降和降雨”野外控制实验平台(河南鸡公山、广东石门台)。该平台是目前国内外第一个尝试从森林冠层可控喷施N和水的设施(实验设计获国家专利:ZL3.0),以期通过模拟N沉降和降雨的自然过程,研究未来全球变化对森林生态系统的影响。
