1988年8月,1994年12月于中国科学院昆明植物研究所获理学硕士学位和理学博士学位。曾赴英国皇家植物园,美国哈佛大学,日本东京大学等做访问学者
1994年12月晋升为副研究员,1997年12月破格为研究员;2008年晋升为二级研究员。

承担完成了“Flora of China ”(Part of Legunimosae), 《云南植物志》(含羞草科以及蝶形花科部分族和属);特别是在青藏高原的植物区系、高山植物多样性等有深入的研究。2006年获“国家杰出青年基金”资助,2007年入选中国科学院百人计划,“新世纪百千万人才工程”国家级人选。
到目前为止共主持基金项目18项,其中包括主持国家自然科学基金重点项目2项,科技部基础工作专项重点项目1项,国家自然科学基金重大国际(地区)合作项目2项和国家基金面上项目3项,中国科学院创新方向性项目1项,云南省自然科学基金重点项目1项;院生物区系特别支持重点项目等等。
主持中国植物区系西藏墨脱雅鲁藏布江越冬考察,中美横断山植物多样性考察(中方主持人,国家自然科学基金重大国际合作项目主持人),青藏高原野生种质资源调查采集等大型野外科学考察和采集以及相关的植物区系调查和补点采集等。采集植物标本近2万号,10万余份。
