By introducing a flexible stochastic frontier gravity model (SFGM), this paper attempts to identify and investigate the frontier and inefficiency determinants of international tourism. Accordingly, the efficiency score of tourism is estimated relative to the theoretical gravity frontier levels. Empirically, China, as one of most liberalized developing economies, is chosen for accessing a country's international tourism efficiency. Based on panel data of tourism arrivals from 21 tourist origins to China over the 1996-2019 period, the empirical findings suggest although China has been able to achieve higher its tourism potentials and efficiency, the tourism efficiency scores show a very uneven pattern across tourist origin countries and country groups in main geographical regions. Also, it has largely exhibit significant uncertainty or instable efficiency realization over the time periods. | | | |
